Seoul is a sprawling metropolis home to almost 12 million denizens. It has a very modern feel with massive electronic billboards advertising the latest in electronic consumer products and huge skyscrapers dominating the city's skyline. However, with a history that spans nearly 600 years, much of its heritage and culture is evident with a plethora of well preserved historical buildings, palaces, temples and other landmarks.

Seoul was known in the past by several names. During Japanese colonial rule, the city was known as Keijo in Japanese or Gyeongseong in Korean. After the Second World War, the Republic of Korea was founded and the city was renamed Seoul.

Visitors are often surprised to learn that much of the city was ravaged and destroyed during the Korean War in the 1950s. The city even changed hands several times between the North Korean troops, supported by the Chinese and the South Korean forces backed by the United nations.

The years following the war, the city underwent major reconstruction. The country as a whole also went through a period of prosperity during the 1960s and 1970s when more buildings, apartments and homes were built.

As the heart of Korea's culture as well as the epicenter of the nation's politics and economics, the city has much to offer. Visitors often marvel at the equilibrium between old and new when revered historical sites co-exist in harmony with the most modern of structures.

Almost any point in the capital can be reached using Seoul's taxis, buses or subway. Visitors are often surprised at how inexpensive it is to travel from location to location using the public transport system. The subway system is quite efficient with signs generally available in both Korean and English. The only caveat is that service is only available from 5:30 a.m. until midnight on most lines.

A favorite among tourists is Gyeongbokgung Palace. Also known as the Palace of Shining Happiness, this magnificent citadel is situated in a picturesque mountainous backdrop with immaculate surroundings. Once visitors tire of walking through the lily ponds and the countless pavilions, they can exit through the back gate and stroll past the Korean presidential residence known as the Blue House.

A visit to the War Memorial of Korea is recommended. Documents and memorabilia from the various military conflicts the country has been involved in are on display. It illustrates some of the most turbulent periods in Korean history and touches heavily on the Korean War.

For a change of pace visitors should try the local cuisine. With a very Asian yet very unique look and taste, visitors are sure to find a dish they truly enjoy. Pulgogi is a popular choice among locals and visitors. Generally known as “Korean barbecue” this dish consists of thinly sliced beef marinated in soy sauce and other seasonings then cooked over a hot charcoal grill.
